What you need to know

Private Jet Terminology

Flying private with Ciel Jets offers a world of comfort, flexibility, and exclusivity, but it also comes with its own vocabulary. Whether you’re booking your first charter or refining your understanding, here’s a glossary of essential private aviation terms to help you navigate with confidence.

Charter Flight

A private flight arranged for a specific trip on a non-commercial aircraft. Unlike commercial airlines, charter flights operate on your schedule and are customized to your preferences.

FBO (Fixed-Base Operator)

The private terminal or facility where private jet passengers arrive, depart, or wait pre-flight. FBOs offer streamlined security, lounges, refreshments, and concierge services—far from the crowds of commercial airports.

Operator

A certified company responsible for the management, maintenance, and operation of a private aircraft. Operators ensure compliance with safety standards and regulations.

Cabin Class
The size category of an aircraft, typically defined as:
  • Light Jet – Up to 6-8 passengers, ideal for short regional trips.
  • Midsize Jet – Greater range and comfort, suitable for coast-to-coast flights.
  • Super Midsize/Heavy Jet – Long-range capability, luxurious interiors, often with standing cabins and full-service amenities.
  • Ultra-Long-Range/Executive Jet – The most spacious and capable, designed for international and transcontinental travel.
Flight Time vs. Block Time
  • Flight Time is the actual time spent in the air.
  • Block Time refers to the time from when the aircraft starts moving on the ground (departure) until it stops at the destination. This is the standard for billing purposes.
Repositioning Fee
A fee charged when an aircraft must travel to your preferred departure airport from another location. Repositioning is common with one-way charters or flights from less-serviced areas.
Turboprop
A type of aircraft powered by a propeller engine. While not a jet, turboprops are often used for short hops or landing at smaller airports with shorter runways.
Lead Time
The advance notice required to schedule a flight. While private aviation offers flexibility, more lead time increases aircraft availability and lowers costs.
APIS (Advance Passenger Information System)
Required for international flights, this system submits passenger details to U.S. Customs and Border Protection in advance for security clearance.
Wet Lease vs. Dry Lease
  • Wet Lease includes the aircraft, crew, maintenance, and insurance.
  • Dry Lease provides only the aircraft, with the customer responsible for hiring crew and managing operations.
Ramp Access

The ability for passengers to drive directly up to the aircraft on the tarmac at certain FBOs, allowing for seamless boarding.
